What’s your attitude to risk and social media?
There are many studies out there that have linked risk-taking and openness to experience with increased creativity. When you’re out of your comfort zone your brain is more likely to make unexpected connections between disparate facts and information. This in turn leads to new insights and exciting new creations.
However, in today’s social media world, where everything is recorded and documented, are you avoiding taking risks because the stakes feel higher? Failures may seem more significant if they’re published for all to see. .
You may wonder how people will judge you and your work when (not if) you produce something epically bad or unusual - and it sits there in a very public arena. Or if it strays too much from what you normally create.
Caring what other people think of your work is counterproductive to creativity, but is necessary if you want to curate a feed that gets you followers, and improves your chances to be seen within the algorithms. Homogeneity is encouraged and rewarded in these circumstances. .
But to hide the attempts is not the answer either. How can you gauge impact or test your theories out if you’re hiding? If you’re working away in a cocoon hoping to only emerge as the beautiful fully-finished butterfly? And how much does that fuel the fixed mindset that perfection is the goal (which it isn’t - growth and progress are the goal).
“Average feels safe, but it’s not. It’s invisible. It’s the last choice - the path of least resistance. You deserve better than average.” ~ Seth Godin
Taking a shower as a kid, I liked filling my mouth with water and pretending I was a fountain by spitting it out. I even assumed different "fountain" poses. Some dreamed of becoming doctors, others of flying into space, and I dreamed of becoming a fountain:).
